How public radio convinced me not to get a new...
I got an iPhone 3Gs right before the 4 came out, and have been kicking myself for almost two years. Next month I can get a free upgrade for $100 or so to get a new iPhone 4s, which has a way better camera, better microphone, better screen resolution, and just looks a lot sexier. And the added bonus of actually being suited to work with the new iOS 5 and not crash all the time (like my current...
Searching for Blelvis on WFPL!
I’m totally honored to have had one of my first radio pieces air on WFPL yesterday! They interviewed me about it, too—always a surreal experience being on the other side of the mic. Listen here.
I’m actually re-visiting the piece for Whisper Cities to get to some things that were left on the cutting room floor back in 2009. Keep checking for that!

Ian MacKaye was on the Kojo Nnamdi Show talking abou the new Fugazi archive!
So far I have acquired the shows from Mechanicsburg, PA, 8/19/93 and in DC 9/3/97.
Which means that if MacKaye is to be believed, I have listened to two more of Fugazi’s live shows than he has.

the thing about obituaries...
My grandparents made a ritual of watching 60 Minutes, which meant that I often wound up watching it, too, when I was at their house for Sunday night dinner. As a child viewer, I usually had no idea what any of the talking heads were talking about—except for that one guy at the end of the show who liked to talk about the problem with coat hangers, or his dissatisfaction with how library...

Here’s how an opinion piece described Wendi Deng Murdoch’s deflection of the pie meant for Rupert’s face:
When the foam dust settled, Rupert Murdoch took off his spoiled jacket, and declined a break in the hearings. With dignity, he and Wendi again took their places, respectfully answering questions.

nostalgia for the now
After watching Woody Allen’s new film, Paris after Midnight, my girlfriend and I got to talking about which era we’d most like to drop in on, if we could. With whose historic elbows would we most like to rub our own?
When I was a kid, I used to think I had belonged in the ’20s—I could have been a newsie sneaking off into the jazz joints to hear the old cats blow. In my...

I wrote that in jest—but maybe we’re closer to that than I’d like to think.
Reading an article on Slate about a new graphic design outsourcing website called crowdspring.com, I was compelled to respond with the below:
When I look at the designs, I don’t see a lack of creativity as much as I do a sense of desperation to get work out into the world as quickly as...

"girl walk," get it running, don't wait
There’s one internet video that speaks so perfectly to the current moment—and future—of the “millennial” generation. Here it is:
Girl Walk // All Day from jacob krupnick on Vimeo.
I’m don’t mean in terms of throwback tracksuits, or long camera takes, or some sort of new creative mojo emerging from New York City.
I’m talking about the work...

“Tchaikovsky Discovers America.” I used to love this as a kid. Still good!
All to say—I’ve been a fan of public media since the proverbial short-pants. Keep federal funding for great stations like WGBH, which produced this series!

why laugh at gaddafi?
A quiz by The Guardian asks if you can correctly attribute ridiculous quotations either to Gaddaffi or Charlie Sheen. Why is there this push to make fun of him, but not other leaders of the Arab world? Granted, it’s pretty funny that his lines could be mistaken for Sheen’s, but Sheen isn’t firing anti-aircraft guns at people.
